Making the choice between Care homes or home care?

Discovering that you or a loved one requires support can be a distressing and difficult time for all involved and considering the type of care that would be most beneficial can be a very hard decision to make.

Different families can have very different needs and if you are researching care homes there are a lot of elements to consider before taking any major steps. However, there are other options to consider, such as home care.

Home care is where your loved one receives care in the familiar surroundings of their own home – whether this be for an hour a day or a more intensive level of live-in care, where the carer will be there around the clock. The benefits of receiving care in the home are numerous and include:

More control over daily routine

By staying at home, you can continue with much of your daily routine which can help you or your loved one retain independence and control. From when to get up, what to eat, when to go to sleep, through to who you socialise with. A carer at home can even assist you on outings so that you can gain even more independence from home care.

Familiar surroundings

For all of us, our home becomes our sanctuary where we can enjoy all the home comforts and pleasures we’ve built up over the years, from our own bed and favourite mug, to photographs of treasured memories on the walls and the neighbours we’ve known for years. These simple things can often be taken for granted in the moment but staying with these simple things for longer can help with mental wellbeing. It can be especially helpful for people with progressive conditions that affect the memory such as dementia.

Family participation

Care homes often have restrictions and set times on many things, including when people can visit, meaning time spent with family and friends can be limited. However, by staying at home your family can visit at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week which can be very beneficial to you or your loved one’s well being.

Our Care Companions treat all the people we care for as if they are members of their own families so your participation can also help us to provide personalised care that meets your needs.

One to one carer

At Ashwell Home Care Services, we understand how important it is for you or your loved one to see a familiar face providing their care as this can make you feel more comfortable and at ease with them so when you receive home care through us we will ensure that the same person provides your care as much as possible.

Though a care home will often have the same carers working, they will be shared between other residents so will have less time to build a relationship with you or your loved one. This also means that care delivered tends to be more regimented with a “one size fits all” approach. However, by staying at home with a live-in care, your care can be tailored to your exact needs.

Flexible, affordable alternative

Many people may consider private care delivered in the home to be a very expensive service but it can actually be cheaper than you might think. It is also a very flexible service and can be provided for as much or as little as you need it to be – from an hour or so every other day to everyday.
